Falls Prevention for Older Adults: How Physiotherapy Reduces Risk at Home

Shena Lee-Anthony, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, HCPC Registered 5 July 2026 6 min read

Every year in the UK, more than one in three adults over 65 experience a fall. For many, a fall is not just a physical injury. It triggers a loss of confidence, a reduction in activity, and a downward spiral that can lead to long-term loss of independence. The good news is that physiotherapy-led falls prevention is one of the most evidence-based interventions available, and it can be delivered entirely in your own home.

Why Falls Are So Dangerous for Older Adults

A fall that might cause a bruise in a younger person can result in a fractured hip, a head injury or a prolonged hospital admission in an older adult. Beyond the physical consequences, the psychological impact is significant. Many older adults who have fallen develop a fear of falling again, which causes them to move less, become more sedentary, and lose the very strength and balance that would protect them. This cycle is well documented in the clinical literature and is one of the primary reasons physiotherapy-led intervention is so important.

How Physiotherapy Reduces Falls Risk

A structured physiotherapy programme for falls prevention typically includes strength training targeting the legs, hips and core, balance training using progressive exercises that challenge stability in a controlled way, gait re-education to improve walking pattern and confidence, home hazard assessment to identify and address environmental risks such as loose rugs, poor lighting or unsuitable footwear, and education for both the patient and their family about risk factors and how to respond if a fall does occur. The evidence for this approach is strong. A 2019 Cochrane review found that exercise programmes delivered by physiotherapists reduced the rate of falls in older adults by up to 23 percent.

The Advantage of Home-Based Falls Prevention

When falls prevention physiotherapy is delivered at home, the therapist can assess the actual environment where falls are most likely to occur. Shena will walk through your home with you, identify specific hazards, and design exercises that are directly relevant to the movements you make every day in your own space. This is far more targeted than a generic gym-based programme. For patients in Maidenhead, Windsor, Marlow and the surrounding area, this means practical, personalised support that makes a real difference.

What a Falls Prevention Programme Looks Like

A typical programme begins with an initial assessment lasting approximately one hour. Shena will assess your strength, balance, walking pattern, medication (which can affect balance), vision, footwear and home environment. From this, a personalised programme is created. Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly, with exercises to practise daily between visits. Most patients notice meaningful improvement in their confidence and stability within four to six weeks.

When to Seek Help

You do not need to have already fallen to benefit from a falls prevention programme. If you or a family member feel unsteady, have noticed a change in walking pattern, have had one or more near-misses, or are recovering from an illness or surgery that has affected strength and balance, now is the right time to act. Early intervention is always more effective than waiting for a fall to occur.
